Acid Reflux Surgery
When to Consider Surgery for Acid Reflux?
Most acid reflux can be treated with lifestyle modifications and over-the-counter or prescription medications. However, when these changes and medications do not work or in more severe diseases including esophageal damage, hiatal hernia, or paraoesophageal hernia, surgery may be a treatment option.
What is Acid Reflux Surgery?
The most common surgery for acid reflux is the Nissen Fundoplication. Dr. Boyett performs a Nissen Fundoplication laparoscopically. Through a few small incisions on the abdomen, Dr. Boyett will locate the stomach. If there is a hiatal hernia, it is repaired and then a small portion of the muscular part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower part of the esophagus to add pressure at the lower esophageal sphincter and thus help prevent reflux. This is a well-tolerated surgery and patients typically spend less than 24 hours in the hospital.
