What is an Upper Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure where Dr. Boyett guides a small flexible tube containing a light and camera through the mouth and down the esophagus. This allows Dr. Boyett to view the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine.

An upper endoscopy is required before many bariatric surgeries as a diagnostic tool to verify a healthy and appropriate stomach to proceed with the surgery. There is also an expanding role for “incisionless” bariatric procedures that utilize the endoscopic approach to achieve surgical weight loss. These procedures function in similar ways to some of the more traditional surgical approaches in that they reduce the volume of the stomach to help limit and restrict food intake.

What are the types of Endoscopic Weight Loss Procedures?

• Gastric Balloon – Entering through the mouth, a large balloon is placed into the stomach and blown up with saline. This allows a distended and full feeling to persist in the stomach leading to decreased hunger and decreased calorie intake.
• Endoscopic Sleeve Gastropexy – A suturing device is used to decrease the size and shape of the stomach from the inside. This is done in a manner to mimic the new shape of the stomach after a surgical sleeve. This procedure helps to decrease the volume of the stomach and helps lead to decreased hunger urges and decreased calorie intake. This leads to higher weight loss than the balloon.
• Endoscopic Gastric Bypass Revision – Some patients have stretching of their gastric bypass pouch as time goes on. They can also have enlargement of the hook-up between the intestine and the pouch. Both problems can be addressed endoscopically. Internal stitches can be used to reduce the pouch size and to shrink the stoma (which is the connection between the pouch and the intestine).
