      What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric Bypass is the most well-known weight loss procedure. It is proven and has the most research behind it. Gastric Bypass is very effective for long-term (maintained) weight loss and can also help reduce heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Gastric Bypass surgery reduces the size of the stomach and re-routes (or bypasses) part of the digestive system. This causes the patient to take in fewer calories and also digest less of what they do take in.

      The Procedure

A small pouch is created in the upper stomach via a stapling device, which limits the amount of food the patient can eat before feeling full.

The small bowel is separated into two sections. The lower portion of the small bowel is attached to the newly created stomach pouch. This causes food to pass directly into the lower portion of the small bowel, bypassing most of the stomach, to continue digestion.

The upper portion of the small bowel is then connected to the lower portion so that it can drain the digestive fluids. This alteration of the gastrointestinal tract changes signals in the body, resulting in decreased hunger and an increased feeling of fullness after meals.

This surgery has been shown to drastically change the hormonal communication back to the brain which helps to change the patient’s relationship with food and metabolism.

      Advantages of the Gastric Bypass

      Proven Weight Loss

Average of 60-75% excess body weight loss at 2 years and maintained long-term.

      Remission for Type 2 Diabetes

While results will vary from patient to patient, many patients have no need for diabetic medications after this procedure.

      Improved Cardiovascular Health

Weight loss surgery lowers the risk of stroke and heart disease.

      Improved Fertility

The significant weight loss that results from Gastric Bypass can improve fertility during childbearing years.

      Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Bariatric surgery (Gastric Bypass in particular) is an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It is especially helpful for obese patients who cannot effectively use CPAP.

      Risks of the Gastric Bypass

      • Dumping syndrome- when the patient eats foods rich in carbohydrates/sugar (such as desserts), the patient may experience flushing, palpitations, nausea, and diarrhea
      • Marginal ulcers at the intestinal attachment site – typically due to the use of NSAIDs (like Advil or Goody’s powder) or tobacco use.
      • Calcium deficiency
      • Anemia
      • Leak
      • Infection

Who Is A Good Candidate for Gastric Bypass?

Generally, Gastric Bypass may be an option for patients with:

      • A body mass index (BMI) over 40 or higher
      • A body mass index (BMI) of 35 – 39.9 and a serious obesity-related condition (e.g. type 2 diabetes, severe sleep apnea, or high blood pressure)
      • A willingness to follow the plan and make the lifelong changes necessary for great results.

What to Expect with a Gastric Bypass

Dr. Boyett performs the gastric bypass laparoscopically or robotically. This means that he places a small number of tiny incisions in the abdomen and then uses specialized tools to create a small pouch in the upper portion of the stomach and reconfigure the small intestine to make a “Y-shape.” The result is that the stomach is much smaller and the absorptive portion of the intestine is shortened.

The gastric bypass operation takes about an hour and a half, and you will stay overnight in the hospital. After the surgery, you will have a strict diet to follow that Dr. Boyett and his dietitian will help you understand before the surgery. This diet will help you achieve optimal results and avoid dumping syndrome.

Most patients lose an average of 60 to 75% excess body weight although individual results depend heavily on your dedication to the lifestyle and dietary changes. This surgery is a very effective tool to help enable you to achieve your goals and is often the best option for patients who suffer from severe diabetes or have esophageal damage from reflux disease.
